Client: VIDA ROads (Formerly Major Road Projects Victoria)

Bogong High Plains Road Landslip

In October 2022, a large active landslip was detected on Bogong High Plains Road – the largest in Victoria in 40 years. Its impact was far reaching, with access to Falls Creek via Mt Beauty cut off, Bogong Village evacuated, and communities and businesses fearful the upcoming winter season would be lost.

Following initial clearing works by the Department of Transport and Planning, Whelans Group and VIDA Roads (Major Road Projects Victoria) ramped up works to restore single lane access ahead of the ski season, with skilled teams, trucks and specialised machinery reaching this goal in April 2023.

Crews continued to remove close to 600,000 tonnes of material in challenging conditions, shaping four large benches to stop material from reaching the road in the future. After 18 months, two lanes finally reopened on Monday 27 May 2024, marking the end of major works.

With two lanes now open, minor finishing works are now completed including connecting a permanent water supply to Bogong Village.

You could say we move mountains at Whelans!

We are incredibly thrilled and beyond proud to have been announced as the winner of the Civil Contractors Federation Victoria 2025 Earth Awards
in the Project Value up to $150M category for the Bogong High Plains Road Landslip.

A huge thank you to our innovative client, VIDA Roads (formerly Major Road Projects Victoria) and the dedicated and nimble design team at WSP In Australia - together, we showcased what is achievable, with construction and design occurring in parallel from the outset to get the road reopened to Falls Creek.

Most importantly, we especially acknowledge our teams on the ground – those relocating for the works, their families, and those operating machinery –
this was by far the most difficult job on the team and without you all, your dedication, hard work and commitment, this could not have been achieved.

As we celebrate 50 years in the business this year, we’ll continue to build on this incredible recognition and look forward to making it happen.
